Cocktails with a Curator: Rosalba Carriera's Portraits

In this week’s “Cocktails with a Curator,” Deputy Director and
Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator Xavier F. Salomon celebrates
Women’s History Month by examining two exquisite pastels
by Rosalba Carriera that recently entered the collection
through a bequest from Alexis Gregory and are on view
for the first time on the third floor of Frick Madison.
Celebrated for her technically innovative pastel portraits,
Rosalba was one of the most famous artists of 18th-century Italy,
particularly remarkable given the male-dominated society
in which she lived.

This week’s complementary cocktail is the Vesper Martini.

The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade: Crash Course Black American History #1

Important Historical Work from Clint Smith:

Today we're learning about the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, which brought millions of captive Africans to the Americas between the 16th and 19th centuries, with the largest number of people trafficked between 1700 and 1808. We'll look at the ships and crews that brought enslaved people across the ocean via what was known as the Middle Passage and explore the horrific conditions that these captives endured.   Watch our videos and review your learning with the Crash Course App! New Dawn - Greenwich Village

Nina Simone’s iconic version of Feeling Good plays as I put the last touches on my final painting for the We Rise L.A. project.

Nina sings:

“It's a new dawn

It's a new day

It's a new life

For me

And I'm feeling good I'm feeling good”

My gouache (opaque watercolor) and ink artworks on paper, explore morning light, morning life, and the hope engendered by the dawn of a new day. Sourced from my memories of travel, these paintings reflect morning journeys, rituals, and routines.

In partnership with We Rise LA for Mental Health Awareness, I have created 41 works of art as messages of hope, beauty, wellbeing, and self-compassion.

Nina sings:

“Oh, freedom is mine And I know how I feel It's a new dawn

It's a new day

It's a new life”

Happy Earth Day 2021! Greta Van Fleet - Tears of Rain (Audio)

🔥Tears of Rain🔥 [Verse 1] Bathing in the light around us Praying for the night to comfort thee Dancing on a cove below us Praying for the flood to set us free [Chorus] And the planet is still turning And the faces are still burning And the mothers with their children search for the rain [Verse 2] Drifting through the plains before us As it turns to dust before our eyes Pleading for a god to pour us Just a little bit of rain from an empty sky [Chorus] And the planet is still turning And the faces are still burning And the mothers with their children search for the rain [Outro] Who will bring the rain, woah Who will bring the rain, hey Who will bring the rain, no no no Who will bring the rain, woah Who will bring it Who will bring the rain
