A woman sits at a table in a diner with an empty seat across from her. On the table is a milkshake with two straws. Will her companion return? What do you think will happen in the next scene?

"Two Straws" is the latest cinematic painting in my L.A. Stories series that explores the wonderfully diverse and sprawling city of Los Angeles.

Nils Lofgren's blistering new song "The Truth Enough” was written in the wake of the January 6th insurrection and “reckons with the ways that misinformation and demagoguery can tear families apart and silo us in our own realities."

One early desert morning, strong coffee in hand, I tuned my Martin D-35 acoustic gifted to me by the great James Caan (bless you Jimmy) to an open G and said ‘write’! Soon the title and main riff were coming through me… “ain’t the truth enough!” Lucky me! I felt I had to go deep and with the global war on women, and man’s deadly epidemic of lies and spin for money and power, I imagined a fierce, loving mother and wife dealing with a husband recently home from the insurrection. (Cindy Mizelle added the woman’s voice with great soul and power here) I felt inspired and a day later this special song was done. Not mean spirited, all truth, harsh reality.

Gregg Chadwick's "A Walk With Obama" Featured in Saatchi Art's Gouache Paintings Collection

 

Excited that my gouache on paper painting "A Walk With Obama" has been included in the new Gouache Paintings Collection on Saatchi Art.

Barack and Michelle Obama were recently seen dancing with Bruce Springsteen at his concert in Barcelona. Michelle was onstage with Bruce, The E Street Band, Patti Scialfa, and Kathleen Sue Spielberg (Kate Capshaw) during the song Glory Days. Barack was offstage hanging out with Steven Spielberg.

Megan Wright, Senior Curator at Saatchi Art put the collection together and writes:

Bruce Springsteen on his landmark album "Nebraska" - CBS Sunday Morning

"In-between his chart-topping album "The River" and his classic "Born in the U.S.A.," Bruce Springsteen recorded a collection of songs on a 4-track cassette recorder in a bedroom at his rented farmhouse - dark, mournful, and rough-hewn songs that reflected the upheaval in his life at a time of rising success. The resulting album, 1982's "Nebraska," would be one of his most personal, and helped solidify his status as one of music's most soulful voices. Springsteen talks with correspondent Jim Axelrod about how "Nebraska" spoke to his evolution as a songwriter. Axelrod also talks with Warren Zanes, author of the new book, "Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's 'Nebraska'."

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day is held each April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. I remember the first Earth Day that was held when I was an elementary school student. That day - April 22, 1970 - resonated deeply with me and I continue to support environmental actions across the globe. Today, Earth Day now includes a wide range of events in more than 193 countries. The official theme for 2023 is Invest In Our Planet.

I was honored that last week Omni Presenti featured my painting "The Greatest of Wanderers". Dale wrote that "This is truly one of my favorite pieces on our website as I have a personal love for elephants. L.A. artist Gregg Chadwick is a master at layering and mixing color as seen in this large 54×54 oil painting, creating a beautiful and ethereal background for this majestic animal."

Trina: Tiny Desk Concert

From NPR: "As a rapper, Trina has been pushing P since before her successors were even sitting up in Pampers and her wild ride of a Tiny Desk concert, 25 years after making her rap debut, only further proves why she is the blueprint.

Decked out in leather, diamonds and a wavy jet-black bussdown, the vet got comfortable behind the Desk quickly, ready to give fans the best of her sprawling discography. Trina temporarily fought back tears as she recited "Mama," a dedication to her late mother who died of cancer in 2019. The crew made the breakup anthem "Here We Go" feel even more aching. The energy in the space made a seismic shift when the band took on the bass-bumpin' classic "Da Baddest Bitch," infusing the live arrangement with nimble guitar, charismatic drums and background vocalists so entertaining, their delivery felt like epic narration from the chorus of an ancient Greek play or, just as epically, a group homegirls hyping up their friend at the function. In the middle of it all was the 305 Queen herself, killing her verses with breath control, authority and bougie hair flips.

"I believe in who I am. The game didn't make me; I made the game. I made it," the Diamond Princess declared in her Louder Than A Riot interview before recording this Tiny Desk concert. "I already came in with a motive and an initiative to know who I am from. That's why I breed a whole universe of bad bitches." Last night the rain cleared just in time for the opening of the latest edition of The Other Art Fair at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. We strolled across the street from my studio at the 18th Street Arts Center and enjoyed seeing old friends and their artwork as well as meeting  artists for the first time and chatting with them about their art and sources of inspiration. Below, amidst their creations are photos of some of the new artists that we met.

Marco Comandini explains that his “What makes us human” project is a series of posters directly influenced by his background as a biologist. Marco says,"As Darwin explained in 'The Evolution of Species', the shark and the dolphin were examples of animals that ended up sharing common features as a result of their ancestors co-existing in an environment that shaped them similarly. In the same way, robots could very well develop the same human emotions that we thought were exclusive to us as they become more and more present in our daily lives."

DATY, the wife and husband team of artists from France describe their new collection of wall hanging sculptures as "L.A. Greatness and Decadence." Their sculptural work is created from cut and treated steel plates. They explain that "light and shadows animate the metal, changing colors, and giving the impression of constant evolution."
