Holiday Memories

Image
Gregg Chadwick The Beehive - Grand Central 30"x30" oil on linen Private Collection, New Haven Almost mid-December. A bit of a chill in the air and memories of holiday seasons from the past come flooding back. The city kid in me loves the hustle and bustle of Xmas shoppers and seasonal revelers. Santa Hats en masse - yes please. Springsteen and the E Street Band's classic Jersey swagger in their version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town - on repeat. Remembered trips from the Grandparent's House in Montclair to Manhattan - Hello Port Authority! And for me - the holiday memory of all holiday memories is the vision of Grand Central Terminal (pictured above) with the Christmas Market and food hall bursting with travelers, sightseers, and locals zipping through the vast space on journeys to gatherings near and far. Romanticised Memories - hell yeah! What are your favorite or not so favorite holiday season memories? Let me know below - Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays every...

Dutch Masters

Image
Gregg Chadwick Rembrandt (Dutch Masters) 10"x7.5"x1" oil on vintage, wood cigar box 2025 The genesis of my lifelong artistic practice can be traced to a deeply personal encounter with Rembrandt’s genius. During my childhood, following my father’s return from military service, my reunited family visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. There, I was captivated by "The Syndics of the Clothmakers' Guild" (1662). I knew the image from the lid of my father’s Dutch Masters cigars. Eureka! This masterwork, enshrined as high art, was simultaneously accessible through popular commercial branding, bridging the historical distance between the 17th century and 20th-century American life. It was a moment of profound clarity, where my family's reunion and the artistic vision on the wall suddenly converged and made sense. Rembrandt captured the vulnerability and struggle of the private self. I often seek to capture the vulnerability of the cultural moment and the struggle...

Tsavo East (The Water Carrier's Dream

Image
Gregg Chadwick Tsavo East (The Water Carrier's Dream 22"x28" oil on linen 2025 Private Collection, Richmond, Virginia   Thrilled that my oil on linen painting "Tsavo East (The Water Carrier's Dream)" is venturing to its new home in Richmond, Virginia. The artwork is part of an ongoing, globally inspired series of paintings that considers our place as humans in the larger natural world. The elephant is both a symbol of resilient strength and also, because of the ivory trade, has become a symbol of the possible extinction of numerous animal species. My paintings of elephants are a call to action. They are elegies for what has been lost, celebrations of the profound beauty that remains, and urgent reminders of our shared responsibility to protect the planet's most vulnerable inhabitants. Water as well is a symbol of life. The bucket the woman carries is part of an effort to make clean water safer and more accessible from local, community owned water facilit...
