Honor the Struggle on International Worker's Day

Image
Gregg Chadwick Riveter 16"x20" oil on linen 2025 On International Worker's Day, I honor the struggles and gains made by laborers since the Industrial Revolution. May Day began as a commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket Tragedy in Chicago. The tragic event has inspired generations of labor leaders, activists, and artists and has been commemorated in monuments, murals, and posters throughout the world, especially in Europe and Latin America. In 1893 the Haymarket Martyrs Monument was erected in a cemetery in the Chicago suburb of Forest Park. I paint in an old hangar at the Santa Monica Airport across the street from Barker Hangar. In these hangars during WWII, a women’s army of aeronautical workers built the Douglas aircraft that helped bring down the fascists across the globe. My painting "Riveter" honors these fierce laborers of the past, present, and future who use their tools of the trade to fight against tyranny and injustice across the globe. Keep the faith...

"We Were Strangers Once, Too": President Obama Lays a New Path on Immigration (Full Transcript)

Image
"Scripture tells us that we shall not oppress a stranger, for we know the heart of a stranger -- we were strangers once, too. My fellow Americans, we are and always will be a nation of immigrants. We were strangers once, too." -- President Obama, November 20, 2014 Remarks of President Barack Obama Address to the Nation on Immigration The White House November 20, 2014 As Prepared for Delivery – My fellow Americans, tonight, I’d like to talk with you about immigration. For more than 200 years, our tradition of welcoming immigrants from around the world has given us a tremendous advantage over other nations. It’s kept us youthful, dynamic, and entrepreneurial. It has shaped our character as a people with limitless possibilities – people not trapped by our past, but able to remake ourselves as we choose. But today, our immigration system is broken, and everybody knows it. Families who enter our country the right way and play by the rules watch others flout the...

Anish Kapoor's Gangnam for Freedom

Image
Gangnam for Freedom - Anish Kapoor and Friends  The British sculptor Anish Kapoor and a group of his human rights oriented friends have released a new video in partnership with Amnesty International and PEN International to bring attention to the ongoing persecution of artists and writers across the globe from China to Russia who have been harassed and imprisoned because of their work. Taking up where Ai Wei Wei's recent Gangnam Style video left off, Kapoor's own Gangnam Style romp combines symbols of imprisonment and torture with the names of many who have been persecuted in their artistic strivings for freedom. Please watch, visit the links, and find out what you can do to help shed light on this growing problem of censorship and oppression. As an emigré from India to the United Kingdom, Anish Kapoor has often been concerned with the ideas of freedom and dislocation in his artwork. I have posted a few exam...

American Skin: The Tragic Death of Trayvon Martin

Image
by Gregg Chadwick As a father I can only imagine the pain of Trayvon Martin's parents. My son is 17, the same age as the teenager Trayvon Martin  who was pursued and shot over one month ago  in Sanford, Florida by "neighborhood watch" member George Zimmerman, reportedly because Trayvon's hoodie made him look suspicious. My son was accepted into college by my undergrad and graduate alma maters this week and we celebrated over dinner, but we couldn't help but think of Trayvon and his family.  In the weeks before his death, Trayvon was planning for college - just a typical junior in high school worrying about his future. A screenshot of Trayvon’s Gmail inbox provided to news sources is heartbreaking. Martin apparently used his Gmail account for his college search, and it’s filled with emails about upcoming SAT tests and scholarship applications. One of the emails reads: “Trayvon, now is the best time to take the SATs!” Holiday Photo of Trayvon Martin Pro...
