WhyHunger: Turn Hope Into Action

Image
Nutritious Food is a Human Right. Through community-fueled solutions, grassroots support, and scaling out sustainable, agroecological food production, WhyHunger meets people’s immediate food needs with dignity while also building a movement to end hunger in the U.S. and around the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the hunger crisis, leaving nearly 54 million Americans and 2 billion people worldwide struggling to feed themselves. In the face of crisis and urgent need, there is still great hope that a healthy, just, and hunger-free world is possible. Together, we can turn hope into action. ——— Special Thanks to: Our Organizational Partners: Jesús Vázquez Organización Boricuá de Agricultura Ecológica de Puerto Rico Facebook: @organizacionboricua Twitter: @orgboricua Instagram: @organizacion_boricua Katrina Sanders, Judy Belue Delta Fresh Foods Initiative - Bolivar Cou...

Equality Act Now!

During @HouseJudiciary today, I shared why the #EqualityAct is so personal to me and my family. My child is finally free to be who they are. With that freedom comes a responsibility, for us as legislators, to legislate with love and not fear. pic.twitter.com/VfpiD9aDyY — Rep. Pramila Jayapal (@RepJayapal) April 2, 2019 As the father of a trans daughter, I agree wholeheartedly with @RepJayapal ! As a country we must "legislate with love not fear" #EqualityAct 🏳️‍🌈 #TransRightsAreHumanRights — Gregg Chadwick (@greggchadwick) April 2, 2019

Transrights are Human Rights!

Image
by Gregg Chadwick On this day in 1948, President Truman ended segregation in the United States Armed Forces. Today in a hate filled series of tweets Trump brought it back. Trump's argument against transgender soldiers echoes one used against gays, women and blacks.  Even as I am calling my Senators and engaging in active measures to help preserve our healthcare, I am standing up against Trump's bigotry. Currently, thousands of transgender folks serve proudly among the 1.3 million active-duty members of the United States military. Brave souls who volunteered to put their lives on the line. Today, their commander in chief kicks them to the curb. The scale of this insult should not be underestimated. An unconscionable act by Trump. As the Women's March organization puts it: "The care of trans people is not a "distraction"—it is a human right."  #TransRightsAreHumanRights   Sorry, Donald, tweets do not a policy make. @Mic pic.twitter.com/0vprabrvKn ...

Have you called your Senator today? Tell them NO on Trumpcare!

by Gregg Chadwick On June 27th , I posted a criticism of the GOP led Senate's horrific proposed healthcare legislation. Their bill is back with a few revisions and it is just as awful as before. The New York Times reports that, "The revised bill is broadly similar to the earlier measure that Senate leaders hoped to vote on before the Fourth of July recess, though the new version includes some additional provisions meant to entice reluctant Republican senators with varying policy concerns.  Like the previous bill , it would end the requirement that most Americans have health coverage, and it would make deep cuts to Medicaid , capping payments to states and rolling back its expansion under the Affordable Care Act. Though some Republican senators expressed concern about how the previous bill would affect Medicaid, Senate leaders stuck with the same approach in the new version." Also, the proposed new bill would allow insurers to offer substandard insurance packages tha...

Primum Non Nocere - First Do No Harm

Image
by Gregg Chadwick As the husband of a cancer survivor I ask those who support Trumpcare- "How can you help pass legislation that you know will kill people? Where is your compassion? Where is your humanity?" Yesterday, the American Medical Association released a letter  expressing fierce opposition to the GOP Senate's current proposed healthcare legislation that would repeal the Affordable Care Act passed during President Obama's first term. The AMA writes,"Medicine has long operated under the precept of Primum non nocere , or “first, do no harm.” The draft legislation violates that standard on many levels." Written in a series of secret closed meetings, the GOP cabal's Better Care Reconciliation Act , or more accurately Trumpcare , is worse than imagined. According to the latest Congressional Budget Office estimations the bill will strip millions of Americans of their health insurance  - increasing the number of people without health insurance by...

The Heroic Ruby Bridges

Image
by Gregg Chadwick Norman Rockwell The Problem We All Live With 36” x 58” oil on canvas 1963 Collection The Norman Rockwell Museum With the insensitive political cartoon posted today by Glenn McCoy lampooning Civil Rights icon Ruby Bridges, I again am drawn to think about this iconic Norman Rockwell painting.  The Problem We All Live With  depicts Ruby as a young girl on her way to first grade after the school board mandated the desegregation of two New Orleans schools in 1960. Six year old Ruby Bridges was escorted by Federal Marshals to New Orleans' William Frantz Public School as its first African American student, ushering in the integration of the local public school system. Painted in 1963 when young Ruby's courage was still becoming global news, Rockwell created a cinematic scene that brings the viewer directly into the moment. We must ask ourselves - do we walk with Ruby and help protect her? Or are we the howling mob tossing rotten produce and f...
