Connoisseurs (Getty Museum)

Image
Gregg Chadwick Connoisseurs (Getty Museum)  24"x22"   acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and Conté on paper   2025 My artwork Connoisseurs (Getty Museum)  was inspired by my love of museums and the beautiful folks that spend contemplative time engaging in the life affirming creations housed in these treasure houses. In the past four months, I have visited the Getty Museum in Los Angeles multiple times to bask in the collected works of Gustave Caillebotte in the marvelous exhibition "Gustave Caillebotte: Painting Men" which closed on Sunday, May 25, 2025. I was at the Getty, on both opening and closing days for this inspiring show.  In my view museums are wonderfully equipped to inspire human connections and mutual understanding through art. "Connoisseurs (Getty Museum)" is richly painted in layers of acrylic colors imported from Australia, Schminke watercolors from Germany, and Sennelier pastels & Conté crayons from France on 100% cotton deckled paper from S...

Blue Velvet (David Lynch)

Image
Blue Velvet (David Lynch) 30"x24" oil on linen 2025 by Gregg Chadwick My oil on linen painting "Blue Velvet (David Lynch" is an homage to a visionary director and his artistic vision. Lynch thought of Los Angeles as a place of hidden mysteries and breathtaking light. Lynch said: “What I really like about {Los Angeles} if you drive around – especially at night – you can get a little gust of wind of the great days of the silver screen. All there in, like, living memory... it was an incredible place to be at the beginning of cinema.” In my artwork, David Lynch stands beneath the Aero Theater marquee in Santa Monica, California which is emblazoned with the words - "David Lynch's Blue Velvet, Sold Out." Just days after his death, the American Cinematheque held a special screening in his honor. I walked up to the Aero to honor the memory of David Lynch. As I arrived the sun was setting across the Pacific and an elegiac glow lit up the theater on Montana Aven...

Two Straws

Image
Gregg Chadwick Two Straws 24"x36" oil on linen 2023 The fresh fragrance of linseed oil and linen fills my studio as I just put some finishing touches on new work. My oil on linen painting "Two Straws" is a short story in paint. A woman sits at a table in a diner with an empty seat across from her. On the table is a milkshake with two straws. Will her companion return? What do you think will happen in the next scene? "Two Straws" is the latest cinematic painting in my L.A. Stories series that explores the wonderfully diverse and sprawling city of Los Angeles. See this artwork and more at our upcoming evening Open Studio Art at the Airport event on May 13, 2023 from 5-9 PM.   #art   #SantaMonica   #SantaMonicaArt   #contemporaryart   #worksonpaper   #artattheairport   #oilonlinen   #diner   #milkshake

One Year In - Ukraine Holds Strong

Image
Gregg Chadwick Home Guard (112th Territorial Defense Brigade - Kyiv, Ukraine) 20"x16" oil on linen 2022 One year ago on Feb 24, 2022 - Russia launched its full scale genocide in Ukraine and 9 years ago this week Russia began its operation to illegally annex Crimea. My painting "Home Guard (112th Territorial Defense Brigade - Kyiv, Ukraine)" is an homage to the brave Ukrainians fighting against an immoral and illegal invasion by Putin's Russia. I remember as a young boy when my father left for war as a US Marine. I can see in the faces of the kids and partners in Ukraine the same mix of fear and pride I felt as my dad told me that he was leaving home to fight for freedom. Ukrainians live in a democratic society that values diversity and opportunity for all. Many couples have decided to fight together against Putin's invasion. Putin wants to crush Ukraine. But he will never prevail against these brave heroes protecting their homeland. In 2015 at the Venice B...

Invitation to My Opening February 18, 2010 at the LOOK Gallery in Los Angeles

Image
Gregg Chadwick The Crossing 72"x36" oil, monotype and collage on Japanese Torinoko paper 2010 The morning of my last day on a trip to Thailand, was particularly luminous. I got up especially early and wandered through the alleys of Chiang Mai, following some monks on their serene morning pilgrimage. The light was almost incandescent and the blur of movement seemed to create paintings for me. I just needed to pay attention. To really see. I spent the time on the short flight to Bangkok watching a kind of film playing in my mind of saffron robes scintillating in the morning mist. Later, as I waited for my connecting flight to San Francisco, I caught sight of a different clip on a television monitor as the second plane crashed into the World Trade Center. It was September 11, 2001. I felt the horror of the crowd as we watched in disbelief. I longed for home and my son. Weeks later when finally back in my studio, the juxtaposition of the monks’ serenity in Thailand that day and...
