Exit to Station

Image
Got the word from my brother last night that my Mom has now moved on to hospice. Packing up our things today - MSue and I will drive North to Pacific Grove tomorrow where my Mom is resting before her great ride on the Mystery Train. Two years ago I was honored to present this painting to a collection of journalists from the UK who were in Santa Monica for Frieze Week. I choked up a bit while describing this painting. My Mom grew up in Newark, New Jersey. Weequahic High grad. Daughter of a Jersey Central Railway engineer.  @jimmybuffs  aficionado. She ventured from the Newark Bay to explore the world with my Dad -  @marines . In this painting, I have gathered a number of her remembrances into an homage to Mom and life itself. The woman in pink seems to be a metaphoric representation of Mom - a young Peg Susan Chadwick on a Newark bridge looking out towards NYC and the world beyond. I can hear her saying -  "Look, I see sunshine!" - "Exit to Station" oil on line...

Redwoods Shouldn't Be So Tall. Here's Why They Are

Image
From PBS Terra: "Beyond its iconic height, the Redwood Forest is sacred to the Yurok Tribe and a scientific frontier for the study of vast biodiversity that exists nowhere else on Earth. This episode of Untold Earth explores the varied relationship between The Redwoods, their forest ecosystems, and the humans who live and work among them. Asking, at every turn, what makes these trees epically singular in nature? Untold Earth explores the seeming impossibilities behind our planet’s strangest, most unique natural wonders. From fragile, untouched ecosystems to familiar but unexplained occurrences in our own backyard, this series chases insight into natural phenomena through the voices that know them best.  Untold Earth is produced in partnership with Atlas Obscura and Nature." How the Light Gets In

Image
by Gregg Chadwick Paintings and sculptures at their best possess an uncanny ability to communicate ideas and feelings that words or other media are hard-pressed to convey. It seems that especially in times of struggle or unrest, art helps us connect to the personhood of others. Art creates dialogue . Dialogue promotes reflective discussion . And reflection can lead to change. Artists often use their creations as a sort of reflecting device that mirrors and focuses the viewer’s attention on social and political unrest. As Marvin Gaye sang so poignantly - “What’s going on.” Gregg Chadwick Call and Echo (left), America’s Sons [From Ferguson to Baltimore] (right) In my solo exhibition at Audis Husar Fine Art, a group of paintings provide their stories. The young man in Call and Echo has been seen by many viewers as an homage to Emmett Till. Not a description of the unspeakable violence enacted on that young man in the 1950’s, but ins...
