"These studio artists offer a visual mediation of time, site, and process. In this time of maelstrom and uncertainty, Points of Departure offers a visual respite for viewers to depart from the daily noise of contemporary life." - Maurizzio Hector Pineda, Curator

My painting Flor De Asfalto (for Sergio Arau) is featured in the Arena 1 exhibitionPoints of Departure. With his music, words and images, Sergio Arau has inspired me to create a series of paintings that feature him as the main character in my painted movies. Rock Star, actor, director, screenwriter, and artist Sergio Arau has often performed while wearing gear honoring Mexico's most famous wrestling star El Santo (The Man In the Silver Mask). Known as lucha libre, Mexican wrestlers such as El Santo are defenders of the poor and vulnerable. By taking on the persona of the Luchador (wrestler), Josh Kun writes in Audiotopia: Music, Race, and America, Sergio Arau and his bands have mixed "the traditional with the contemporary, the rural with the urban, the American with the Mexican, the charro with the rockero."
My painting Flor De Asfalto (for Sergio Arau) carries Sergio Arau into a Los Angeles seemingly pulled from the lyrics of his songs or gathered from scenes of his films that were left on the cutting room floor.

Gracias Sergio!

Last night Italian pianist Giuseppina Torre gazed attentively at my painting  Sea and Shadow (Mare e Ombra) and said to me,"La luce a Venezia รจ magica." I agreed, the light in Venice is magic. And there is light in Giuseppina Torre's music as well. Earlier that evening in the Arena 1 Gallery at the Santa Monica Art Studios she gave us a taste of her haunting piano compositions at the opening of an  Italian cultural event entitled All Roads Lead to LA, presented in conjunction with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Los Angeles.

The celebration continues tonight with  poetry, music, fashion and the visual arts.
The evening will begin with a poetry reading at 5 pm to be followed by an hour-long performance by Giuseppina Torre. A presentation of contemporary Italian fashion will round out the evening.
Watch a performance of Torre's The Hush of Stars below and join us tonight at the Santa Monica Art Studios ~ Sunday, April 6, 2014 ~ for a magical evening of music and light. My studio will again be open.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with Art, Workshops, Music & Food
at the Santa Monica Airport Artwalk 2012
Saturday, March 17, 12-5pm

Each year the city of Santa Monica sponsors an Art Walk at the Santa Monica Airport. At the airport a  community of artists works quietly alongside the hum of rotor blades and the roar of jet engines. Hidden from the world at large on most days, on March 17th 2012 the artists that call the airport home will once again open their studio doors and let the public into their creative process. I am fortunate to have an intelligent, talented and caring group of artists and gallerists around me. When the news of the world threatens to throttle our creative souls, a shared artistic community can help keep us on the path.

I enjoy this day greatly. The crowd of visitors is convivial and eclectic and represents the diversity that I love in Los Angeles. Children and friends of all ages are welcome.

My studio is located at the Santa Monica Art Studios Hangar
Studio #15
3026 AirportAvenue
Santa Monica, CA 90405

The event runs from 12pm to 5pm. Hope to see you on March 17, 2012!
