Honor the Struggle on International Worker's Day

Image
Gregg Chadwick Riveter 16"x20" oil on linen 2025 On International Worker's Day, I honor the struggles and gains made by laborers since the Industrial Revolution. May Day began as a commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket Tragedy in Chicago. The tragic event has inspired generations of labor leaders, activists, and artists and has been commemorated in monuments, murals, and posters throughout the world, especially in Europe and Latin America. In 1893 the Haymarket Martyrs Monument was erected in a cemetery in the Chicago suburb of Forest Park. I paint in an old hangar at the Santa Monica Airport across the street from Barker Hangar. In these hangars during WWII, a women’s army of aeronautical workers built the Douglas aircraft that helped bring down the fascists across the globe. My painting "Riveter" honors these fierce laborers of the past, present, and future who use their tools of the trade to fight against tyranny and injustice across the globe. Keep the faith...

Blue Velvet (David Lynch)

Image
Blue Velvet (David Lynch) 30"x24" oil on linen 2025 by Gregg Chadwick My oil on linen painting "Blue Velvet (David Lynch" is an homage to a visionary director and his artistic vision. Lynch thought of Los Angeles as a place of hidden mysteries and breathtaking light. Lynch said: “What I really like about {Los Angeles} if you drive around – especially at night – you can get a little gust of wind of the great days of the silver screen. All there in, like, living memory... it was an incredible place to be at the beginning of cinema.” In my artwork, David Lynch stands beneath the Aero Theater marquee in Santa Monica, California which is emblazoned with the words - "David Lynch's Blue Velvet, Sold Out." Just days after his death, the American Cinematheque held a special screening in his honor. I walked up to the Aero to honor the memory of David Lynch. As I arrived the sun was setting across the Pacific and an elegiac glow lit up the theater on Montana Aven...

Lumen The Art and Science of Light at the Getty Museum

Image
Wonderful weekend at the  @gettymuseum  - "To be human is to crave light. We rise and sleep according to the rhythms of the sun, and have long associated light with divinity. Focusing on the arts of western Europe, Lumen explores the ways in which the science of light was studied by Christian, Jewish, and Muslim philosophers, theologians, and artists during the “long Middle Ages” (800-1600 CE). During this period science (or the study of the physical universe) served as the connective thread for diverse cultures across Europe and the Mediterranean, uniting scholars who inherited, translated, and improved upon a common foundation of ancient Greek scholarship. Several contemporary artworks, including special installations by Helen Pashgian and Charles Ross will extend the exhibition’s reach throughout the Museum." Image
Wow! Over 1400 folks visited our studios during the latest 2024 edition of the Santa Monica Airport Artwalk. Thanks to all the folks who visited my studio and engaged with me, my family, and my art. My recent painted homage to Basquiat found a moment with Austin while  @sergioarau  looked on from the background with a copy of  @la_weather_novel  by  @mariaescandon  in his hands.
