Democratic National Convention: Day 4

Image
If you've been mesmerized by the DNC on TV, you can't imagine the vibes of being here - a political convention where a rave broke out. How Dems threw off 40 years of fear, found a voice, stopped caring about the media and started having fun My column🎁 https://t.co/VpSpsHFYM9 — Will Bunch (@Will_Bunch) August 22, 2024 Still thinking about this pic.twitter.com/cZhqFs5zvu — Kamala HQ (@KamalaHQ) August 22, 2024 Oldest DNC delegate: Each convention has been so exciting. But this one especially. It's for women. It's for everyone. It's something that I can't explain. I feel like the world is opening up to everybody, every color, every creed, and every woman pic.twitter.com/5JluNJQ41M — Kamala HQ (@KamalaHQ) August 22, 2024

Vantage Point (Chicago Theatre)

Image
Gregg Chadwick Vantage Point (Chicago Theatre) 30"x22"gouache on paper 2022 Private Collection Bloomington, Illinois Day turns towards night on State Street in Chicago. Above us glows the marquee of the timeless Chicago Theatre. Built in 1921, the building just celebrated its centennial last year. I am reminded that as a child - my father, a career military officer, taught me to be aware of my surroundings. "Always look up," my Dad would say. And as an artist, I heed his words and look up to see what is above.

The Monk's Road

Image
Gregg Chadwick The Monk's Road 36"x36" oil on panel 2018 I’m very pleased to let you know that my painting  The Monk's Road  has been chosen to be featured in the New This Week Collection on Saatchi Art's homepage.   The Monk's Road  is part of an ongoing series of artworks about seeking peace and justice in a world in need of harmony. In the mountains of Northern Thailand, rising above the city of Chiang Mai, peaks are often caught in an early morning sea of fog. Written as ทะเลหมอก in Thai, this mist often covers the summit of Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest peak. On the mountain slope- two Buddhist stupas, often referred to as chedis in Thailand, sit to honor the monarchs of Thailand. Known as Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon and -Nophamethanidon, the chedis were named to reflect the power of the sky and the grace of the land.  My painting "The Monk's Road" is set in this mist shrouded landscape. Three Buddhist monks in...

Between Worlds (Chicago)

Image
by Gregg Chadwick Gregg Chadwick Between Worlds (Chicago) 24"x24" oil on linen 2018 Sneak peek at new artwork to be featured at The Other Art Fair in Chicago -  My oil on linen painting Between Worlds (Chicago) was inspired by the industrial design of Raymond Loewy and the spirit of adventure that lies at the heart of the United States.  Two vehicles designed by Loewy stand side by side in a rail yard with the Chicago skyline behind. Glistening in black, the streamlined Pennsylvania Railroad “Broadway Limited” shares the scene with a gold 1938 Studebaker President.

Anish Kapoor's Gangnam for Freedom

Image
Gangnam for Freedom - Anish Kapoor and Friends  The British sculptor Anish Kapoor and a group of his human rights oriented friends have released a new video in partnership with Amnesty International and PEN International to bring attention to the ongoing persecution of artists and writers across the globe from China to Russia who have been harassed and imprisoned because of their work. Taking up where Ai Wei Wei's recent Gangnam Style video left off, Kapoor's own Gangnam Style romp combines symbols of imprisonment and torture with the names of many who have been persecuted in their artistic strivings for freedom. Please watch, visit the links, and find out what you can do to help shed light on this growing problem of censorship and oppression. As an emigré from India to the United Kingdom, Anish Kapoor has often been concerned with the ideas of freedom and dislocation in his artwork. I have posted a few exam...

Under the El

Image
by Gregg Chadwick Gregg Chadwick Under the El 30"x20" oil on linen 2012 Chicago is a city of pulse and rhythm.  The city itself is a song. It clangs and roars by day and whispers laments at night.  Standing under the El on a hot August day, listening to the hum of traffic echoing off of steel, concrete and flesh inspired my first painting of 2012. Chicago seemed to soak up the light last summer, lending the streets a shimmering presence much like the wet Parisian boulevards in Gustave Caillebotte's  Paris Street, Rainy Day.  Caillebotte's masterpiece hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago , just blocks from the El.  Standing in front of the painting last summer, after coming in from the heat, I felt my heart beating -providing an audible rhythm to Caillebotte's figures stilled in the silent air.
