A Tour Through My Studio from Artsy Los Angeles

Enjoy a tour through my studio courtesy the amazing Artsy Los Angeles. Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday for the Santa Monica Airport Artwalk! Great chatting with Ruskin theater director John Ruskin and so many more. And for all of you who attended Saatchi Art's The Other Art Fair and visited my studio yesterday, major props to you! If you missed both events and would like to spend some time with my art, please email me at greggchadwick@gmail.com and let's set up a visit.

TODAY: Gregg Chadwick: A Retrospective Look at the 11th Annual Santa Monica Airport Artwalk

by Gregg Chadwick

Today - a special look at my paintings and monotypes at the Santa Monica Art Studios on March 18, 2017 from 12-5 pm as part of the 11th Annual Santa Monica Airport Artwalk.

Featuring A Balance of Shadows from my 2004 solo exhibition in San Francisco and an overview of my artwork from 1999-2017, my studio will be a time capsule for one day.
Many of the artworks on view have been loaned from private collections and are rarely on public view. In addition, a choice selection of paintings and monotypes will be available for purchase.

Many of my paintings are inspired by poetry, history, and literature. When I lived in San Francisco and often on return visits, Lawrence Ferlinghetti's bookstore City Lights beckoned. A few years ago with my great friend Phil Cousineau on a book tour for our joint effort The Painted Word, we were able to stand together in a packed upper room at City Lights and express our deep admiration for Ferlinghetti's inspiration. My painting The City Drifts (San Francisco) seems to carry the feelings we all felt in the bookstore that night. Ferlinghetti's poem The Changing Light (see below) embodies that wistful moment.

The Changing Light

by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

The changing light

at San Francisco

is none of your East Coast light

none of your

pearly light of Paris

The light of San Francisco

is a sea light

an island light

And the light of fog

blanketing the hills

drifting in at night

through the Golden Gate

to lie on the city at dawn

And then the halcyon late mornings

after the fog burns off

and the sun paints white houses

with the sea light of Greece

with sharp clean shadows

making the town look like

it had just been painted

But the wind comes up at four o'clock

sweeping the hills

And then the veil of light of early evening

And then another scrim

when the new night fog

floats in

And in that vale of light

the city drifts

anchorless upon the ocean

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with Art, Workshops, Music & Food
at the Santa Monica Airport Artwalk 2012
Saturday, March 17, 12-5pm

Each year the city of Santa Monica sponsors an Art Walk at the Santa Monica Airport. At the airport a  community of artists works quietly alongside the hum of rotor blades and the roar of jet engines. Hidden from the world at large on most days, on March 17th 2012 the artists that call the airport home will once again open their studio doors and let the public into their creative process. I am fortunate to have an intelligent, talented and caring group of artists and gallerists around me. When the news of the world threatens to throttle our creative souls, a shared artistic community can help keep us on the path.

I enjoy this day greatly. The crowd of visitors is convivial and eclectic and represents the diversity that I love in Los Angeles. Children and friends of all ages are welcome.

When a painting seems to be finished I ask,
"Is the work open enough to allow the viewer
to enter into the painting and find their own
path or story?" If not, I dive back in again.

Coming up soon is the 3rd Annual Santa Monica Airport Artwalk on Saturday, March 28 from 1 to 5 pm. My studio will be open and I will have a group of new paintings on view. This will be a nice opportunity for you to take some time off from the stresses of our twittering world and to enter into my paintings in search of your own paths or stories.

I will be in Tokyo but my talented friend, the singer/songwriter/dancer Kelly Colbert, will be on hand to answer questions and to engage you in conversation about art and perhaps, life?

Also, that same week, the numinous artist, Doni Silver Simons', exhibition "....lines...." will open at the Sherry Frumkin Gallery on Thursday, March 26, 2009. The reception runs from 6-9pm. The Sherry Frumkin Gallery is in the same hangar as my studio, as is Doni's studio. As an act of community, Doni has asked us to open our studios during her opening on Thursday, March 26. Kelly Colbert will be on hand in my studio on the 26th as well. I am fortunate to have such a group of intelligent, talented and caring artists and gallerists around me. When the news of the world threatens to throttle our creative souls, a shared artistic community can help keep us on the path. Doni Silver Simon's work marks the passage of time yet its open spaces are less elegiac than timeless. Like the photos of Hiroshi Sugimoto, Doni Silver Simons limns the ineffable space of time.
