Opening Night at The Other Art Fair - March 30, 2023

by Gregg Chadwick

🎧 @dublab keeps the energy high at the turntables

Last night the rain cleared just in time for the opening of the latest edition of The Other Art Fair at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. We strolled across the street from my studio at the 18th Street Arts Center and enjoyed seeing old friends and their artwork as well as meeting  artists for the first time and chatting with them about their art and sources of inspiration. Below, amidst their creations are photos of some of the new artists that we met.

Los Angeles

"As humans, we can be all over the place – thoughts and ideas swirling left and right. From the process to the technique, to the finished piece, it’s my artistic mission to capture those unique and special moments that make us feel connected to this abundant world. That unique moment in time where the reality of life – good, bad, and everything in between – is looking at you right in the face. And hopefully you begin to realize how easy it is to see ourselves in each other."

MarySue Chats with Cortney

New York/Genoa

Marco Comandini explains that his “What makes us human” project is a series of posters directly influenced by his background as a biologist. Marco says,"As Darwin explained in 'The Evolution of Species', the shark and the dolphin were examples of animals that ended up sharing common features as a result of their ancestors co-existing in an environment that shaped them similarly. In the same way, robots could very well develop the same human emotions that we thought were exclusive to us as they become more and more present in our daily lives."

Los Angeles

"I gravitate towards silkscreen printing as it’s a medium that blurs the boundary between art and graphic design. My work also exists in the tension between the fabricated and handmade. The precision of the forms is offset by miss-registrations and color shifts from over-printing."

Trinidad

Tessa Alexander is an artist and art educator based in Trinidad. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Cultural Studies. Tessa describes her project as "a troubling of the Caribbean archive and art canon as she investigates the silenced art histories of her foremothers."

California

"Society tells us that beauty is perfection and our worth is based on our physical appearance. That is simply not true, true beauty is eclectic and it tell the story of who we are and what we have been through. My hope is to inspire woman to shine , to love themselves and be exactly who they inspire to be." - Jeanette Rivera

Los Angeles

Emily Wallerstein describes her oil paintings as "representations of the beautiful blur of life - perfect from a distance, but messy and imperfect up close."

Industrial and Salvage Transportation Paintings by Jasper Latane

Jasper Latane's side gig as an art handler and driver seems to inspire elements of his evocative transportation artworks.

DATY (Frédéric and Andrea Daty)
Paris/Chartres

DATY, the wife and husband team of artists from France describe their new collection of wall hanging sculptures as "L.A. Greatness and Decadence." Their sculptural work is created from cut and treated steel plates. They explain that "light and shadows animate the metal, changing colors, and giving the impression of constant evolution."

Please Note: In response to queries, I am not exhibiting my artwork at this edition of TOAF, but will in the near future. Working on an exciting new body of work...

Monk Station

Gregg Chadwick
Monk Station
30"x30"oil on linen 2020

"Move towards the light", a friend said to me as we wandered the streets of Montreal on a crisp spring afternoon. My painting "Monk Station" is inspired by that day and depicts a saffron robed pilgrim in a 21st century urban moment. The monk is moving towards the light. Set in a subway station in Montreal, this painting looks at the place of the spirit in our fast paced lives.

Honored that "Monk Station" was curated into Los Angeles Latest Collections by Briana Salatino, Fair Assistant at The Other Art Fair:

Homage to Frida Kahlo

Gregg Chadwick
10"x10"oil on cigar box 2021
Private Collection Los Angeles

My oil on wood cigar box painting of Frida Kahlo is the latest in a series of artworks that amplifies the shared culture between Mexico and the United States. Frida was a dynamo. Her artworks explore the realms of myth, memory, and physical reality in groundbreaking ways. My latest portrait of Frida is an homage to her work and influence.

My painting imagines Frida when she lived in San Francisco. In 1930-31 Frida and Diego Rivera lived at 716 Montgomery Street in San Francisco, just down the hill from North Beach and Chinatown. Frida met and created with a group of artists who energized her creative process. KQED notes that "For six months, the couple stayed at the studio of Rivera’s old classmate and friend, sculptor Ralph Stackpole, who introduced them to an eclectic group of writers, painters and photographers." For a number of years, I lived in San Francisco at the corner of Green and Montgomery streets. I would often walk down the steep hill on Montgomery towards the Transamerica building and imagine Frida living in my neighborhood. More on Frida in San Francisco in the marvelous program and article by KQED - Inside Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's Life in San Francisco

Exhibited and sold at The Other Art Fair Los Angeles at Barker Hangar September 2021. Thank you to all my collectors and followers. I so appreciate your interest in my artwork.

Thanks to everyone who commented on and enjoyed the painting at @theotherartfair

Tax the Rich

Gregg Chadwick
12"x9"oil on panel 2021

Congressional Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez created headlines around the globe with her Tax the Rich Dress worn at the 2021 Met Gala.

The socially provocative dress was designed by Aurora James who said in the New York Times: Listen, it would be a lot easier to go to the Met Gala and just wear a really beautiful dress and look really beautiful and have a good time. But that was not her intention, right? Her intention was to take a conversation that’s largely existing in working-class communities and bring it into rooms where that conversation might be a little bit more uncomfortable. It’s not easy to show up in a room like that, with a statement like that.

There’s a lot of people who gain access to rooms like that and are too afraid to rock the boat."

My painting celebrates AOC, Aurora James, and everyone rocking the boat. Thanks to everyone who commented on and enjoyed the painting at @theotherartfair

Featuring New Paintings About Our Fragile Earth
& Humanity's Tensile Strength

I first became aware of the fragile nature of our planet as an elementary
school student. For Christmas one year, I asked my parents for the book
Wildlife in Danger published by the IUCN
(International Union for the Conservation of Nature).
They are still an important organization providing information, plans,
and hope for our endangered earth. Worried about the environment
as a kid, I drew pictures of animals constantly. Now I have brought out
a series of paintings inspired by the 50th anniversary of Earth Day that
shed light on climate change, the beauty of the natural world, and
our place with other species. The Greatest of Wanderers will be
on exhibit at The Other Art Fair at Barker Hangar starting on
Thursday night, September 23, 2021.

Frontlines
37"x24" oil on linen 2021

Art at its best possess an uncanny ability to communicate ideas and feelings that we need to understand. It seems that especially in times of struggle or unrest, art helps us connect to the personhood of others especially during the current Covid epidemic. My painting Frontlines celebrates the nurses and other healthcare workers battling for all of us.

My paintings are crafted as reflecting devices that mirror and focus the viewer’s attention on where we've been, and where we are going. As Marvin Gaye sang so poignantly - “What’s going on.”. Frontlines will be on exhibit at The Other Art Fair at Barker Hangar from September 23, 2021 -September 26, 2021.

Director's Pick: Gregg Chadwick

The Other Art Fair

presents

Travels With
Gregg Chadwick

I am honored to have been chosen this week by The Other Art Fair Los Angeles director Nicole Garton as her Director’s Pick.
Deep thanks to Nicole Garton, The Other Art Fair and Saatchi Art. Please take a journey with me in the paintings below.

Arrivals and Departures

On June 26, 2015 Marriage Equality became the law of the land and with hundreds of others we celebrated on the Supreme Court steps. Later on that glorious day, I chatted with President Obama’s photographer Pete Souza in front of the White House which was lit up in rainbow colors in celebration of the LGBTQ community.
While we watched, the Presidential Marine Corps air unit returned with President Obama from his moving speech at the memorial service for the church folks who were gunned down by a young white supremacist in South Carolina. President Obama sang “Amazing Grace” that day.
In her current Netflix film Becoming, Michelle Obama reflects upon that day as well. Michelle Obama describes how she and her daughter Malia sneaked outside that night, needing to share in the crowd’s joy after all the terrible grief in Charleston. They let the jubilation soften their anguish. Arrivals and departures. The struggle for equality for all continues.

Steps of Time

In the morning light, a young monk walks along a path that has been traveled by other monks for centuries. This moment is an accumulation of all the moments that have come before and will occur again.
For 20 years, I have painted artworks inspired by the aspirational nature of Buddhism. “Gregg Chadwick paints scenes from the life of Asia that reminds us of the monastic life of pilgrimage which has been all but lost in the West.”
-Ratnagarbha and Thomas Jones
from “Urthona: Journal of Buddhism and the Arts” Issue 20

Bookseller’s Night

I was inspired by a sojourn in Paris near Montmartre. That summer the light hung on late into the evening until the sky rolled into the blue hour. While walking the Parisian streets under those deep blue skies, I would often stop to glance at books spread out like magical treatises on art and life. We lived that summer in the shadow of Monet, Manet, and Caillebotte. Two of Manet’s last studios were on our street and nearby on the Place de Dublin, Caillebotte set his magical painting Paris Street; Rainy Day (Rue de Paris, temps de pluie). Nearby was the Gare Saint-Lazare which inspired Monet to create Turneresque images of trains and steam. I carried those memories with me as I painted Bookseller’s Night along with time traveling thoughts of San Francisco and New York.

Spring Reader (Botanical Garden)

I am honored to have my painting The Reader (Botanical Garden) up for auction in this year’s Venice Family Clinic Art Walk and Auction. I’ve donated a painting to the cause for 15 years now and am excited to have this sensitive artwork in this year’s auction. To pick up a book and be transported to another world is one of life’s great pleasures. In my oil on panel painting, a woman sits with quiet dignity and reads on a spring day. One can almost smell honeysuckle in the air and feel a cool breeze on a warm day.
