You Are Invited - Sept 15, 2017 : Luchador’s Dream - Inspired by Sergio Arau (New Paintings by Gregg Chadwick)

Image
by Gregg Chadwick Gregg Chadwick Flor De Asfalto (for Sergio Arau) 56”x86” oil on linen 2017 With his music, words and images, Sergio Arau has inspired me to create a series of paintings that feature him as the main character in my painted movies. Rock Star, actor, director, screenwriter, and artist Sergio Arau has often performed while wearing gear honoring Mexico's most famous wrestling star El Santo (The Man In the Silver Mask). Known as lucha libre, Mexican wrestlers such as El Santo are defenders of the poor and vulnerable. By taking on the persona of the Luchador (wrestler), Josh Kun writes in Audiotopia: Music, Race, and America , Sergio Arau and his bands have mixed "the traditional with the contemporary, the rural with the urban, the American with the Mexican, the charro with the rockero."  My paintings in Luchador's Dream  carry Sergio Arau into a Los Angeles seemingly pulled from the lyrics of his songs or gathered from scenes of his f...

Painter and Model

Image
Gregg Chadwick Painter and Model 16"x20" oil on linen 2010 I recently returned from a trip to Paris, Amsterdam and Maastricht. Art, ideas and images from each of these cities hover in my mind. The works of Lucian Freud, on exhibit at the Pompidou Center in Paris until the 19th of July 2010, are in the forefront as I just completed a painting for the Julie Nester Gallery's Self Portrait Exhibition which opens on June 12, 2010. Invitation to My Opening February 18, 2010 at the LOOK Gallery in Los Angeles

Gregg Chadwick The Crossing 72"x36" oil, monotype and collage on Japanese Torinoko paper 2010 The morning of my last day on a trip to Thailand, was particularly luminous. I got up especially early and wandered through the alleys of Chiang Mai, following some monks on their serene morning pilgrimage. The light was almost incandescent and the blur of movement seemed to create paintings for me. I just needed to pay attention. To really see. I spent the time on the short flight to Bangkok watching a kind of film playing in my mind of saffron robes scintillating in the morning mist. Later, as I waited for my connecting flight to San Francisco, I caught sight of a different clip on a television monitor as the second plane crashed into the World Trade Center. It was September 11, 2001. I felt the horror of the crowd as we watched in disbelief. I longed for home and my son. Weeks later when finally back in my studio, the juxtaposition of the monks’ serenity in Thailand that day and...
