Kamala at Howard

Image
by Gregg Chadwick  Gregg Chadwick Kamala at Howard 20"x20"" oil on linen 2020 My oil on linen painting "Kamala at Howard" was inspired by the young Kamala Harris as an undergraduate at Howard University in Washington DC. The images of Kamala as a member of the influential Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority bring a smile to my face. Finally it seems that Generation X will have a place in the upper reaches of the executive branch as Kamala is fighting to become the first woman to be Vice President. Coming from a family with a Black father originally from Jamaica and a mother originally from India, Kamala will also will be the first person of Asian and Black ancestry to be VP. Having lived in San Francisco for a number of years, I was fortunate to be able to vote for Kamala in every one of her political races - from San Francisco District Attorney, to California DA, To Senator from California, and now as Joe Biden's running mate. Ï'm Speaking", Kamala said a...

19th Amendment at 100

100 years ago today: the U.S. Senate in 56-25 vote adopted what would become the 19th amendment “The right of the citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” # 19thAt100 On this day in 1919, Congress approved the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote. African American women, however, still faced barriers exercising their right to vote. This could include waiting hours to register, facing violence, or taking new tests. #19thAt100 pic.twitter.com/b3RhpehBr3 — Smithsonian NMAAHC (@NMAAHC) June 4, 2019

"Land of Hope and Dreams" from Springsteen on Broadway

Image
Gregg Chadwick American River (for Greil Marcus) 24”x36” oil on linen 2016 Audis Husar Gallery, Beverly Hills                  Bruce Springsteen has pre-released an album from his Springsteen on Broadway engagement. His  album announcement  is accompanied by a first taste of his  Broadway  recording: an acoustic version of his train metaphor song "Land of Hope and Dreams."  Lauren Onkey writes about the song on  NPR Music : "Land of Hope and Dreams" is the penultimate song of the Broadway show, an uplifting end to a night that features a lot of heartbreaking stories of characters — including Springsteen himself — who fall into isolation. Rooted in the gospel song "This Train" and The Impressions' 1965 gospel-soul hit "People Get Ready," "Land of Hope and Dreams" imagines a communal train where all are welcome — saints, sinners, whores, gamblers, thieves, lost souls, fools, kings, the brokenh...

Thank You Taylor Swift!

View this post on Instagram I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is...
