“Where Legends Took Flight” 
Santa Monica Airport History (Livestream)


“I have created my light-filled paintings in a converted hangar at the Santa Monica Airport for the past 22 years. My studio is more than a workspace—it is a daily catalyst where the momentum of flight feeds directly into my explorations of time, history, and fleeting encounters,” - Gregg Chadwick

On March 17, 1924, Douglas World Cruisers launched from Clover Field—now Santa Monica Airport (SMO)—on the very first flight around the world. As part of the Santa Monica Conservancy’s Mosaic program, Final Approach: The Past and Future of Santa Monica Airport examines SMO’s transformation from an aviation cradle into an indispensable base for creative, nonprofit, and instructional communities.

Part One, “Where Legends Took Flight,” features host Libby Motika alongside Nina Fresco (historian and author of First Around the World), Cheri Cimmarrusti (Associate Executive Director at Angel Flight West), and myself, speaking on my experience as one of the founding artists-in-residence at the Santa Monica Airport’s Arts Center. The presentation also includes an inside look filmed directly in my studio.

I am proud to contribute to THE ART OF__, an auction hosted by John Moran Auctioneers and Appraisers to benefit The Laurel Foundation. Founded in 1993, this 501(c)(3) provides free, empowering mental health, educational, and social support programs for transgender and gender-diverse youth, as well as children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Presented by the City of Santa Monica and Community Arts Resources (CARS), There Once Were Millions is an urgent art and ecology exhibition dedicated to the plight and preservation of the Western Monarch Butterfly. My featured work, The Monarch Hour, anchors my longstanding commitment to social and environmental issues.

Cherry Blossoms and Kamikaze

by Gregg Chadwick While glancing at the schedule for this week’s National Critics Conference (May 25-28, 2005) at the Omni Hotel in Los Angeles, I came across the description for Elizabeth Zimmer's "Kamikaze Writing Workshop." Obviously the word "kamikaze" has shifted in tone and meaning since it first entered the American vocabulary during the last years of WWII. I doubt that Zimmer’s criticism class will make a fiery plunge into the conference hall as a final project. But I was reminded of the important work being done in the fields of aesthetics and history by Emiko Ohnuki – Tierney at the University of Wisconsin. Cherry blossom send off. Kamikaze means "divine wind" in Japanese, and originally referred to a miraculous typhoon that saved Japan from a Mongolian invasion force in the 13th century. The Japanese Navy used this term to describe their suicide attack planes. In America, the word "kamikaze" describes actions that are...
